The Birmingham News just posted a story I wrote about Leah Price, one of the women I interviewed and whose picture was taken by David Jay: http://blog.al.com/birmingham-news-commentary/2012/10/opinion_by_breast_cancer_survi.html
The story addresses the ways in which the campaign for breast cancer awareness has succeeded in getting the word out about the risk of breast cancer and the importance of early detection, but it has not been as successful in helping women who lack health insurance or other resources gain access to the growing options for treatment of the disease. Until the crusade expands to turn awareness into action, the battle must continue.
The B’ham News, by the way, has followed the lead of many newspapers across the country by shifting its distribution schedule. Al.com now carries what used to be included in the daily paper, whereas the print version is published on Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays only. This Wednesday, the “pink paper” will be published in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and I’m waiting to hear whether or not my commentary will appear again in print.
